Antique and exotic in appearance, this culturally rich Buddha pendant necklace could be right out of an ancient Chinese burial site. Stunning jade globes of deep amber, creamy browns and olive green jade are intricately carved with a spiral pattern, giving the impression of ancient stone carvings. These beads coupled with warm ambertone jade rondelles, antiqued ivory bone, rusty amber bone, intricate African brass and a fascinating bronze Buddha pendant make for an intriguing and significant one-of-a-kind piece of art to wear jewelry.
Each of the oversize jade beads is completely unique ranging in color from white to yellow, orange, red, olive green and brown as well as having variations in texture and matrixing. Although usually thought of as being green, natural jade varies in color with the pale-green color stones being the most sought after. Jade has been revered by the Chinese culture from the beginning of time with jade objects found by archeologists dating back to the Neolithic period. It is valued by the Chinese above all other materials including ivory and gold and is called "The Stone of Heaven", believed to be a link between the physical and spiritual worlds and the material form that best embodies the yin and yang qualities of heaven and earth.
Jade’s appearance is warm, approachable and desirable and wearing jade is thought to bring health and vitality while warding off bad luck and misfortune. It is also known as a symbol of love and virtue. There are many gemstones on the market today that are sold as jade, but are actually often serpentine. They are still beautiful and a natural stone, but not actual jade. These particular stones were sold to me as old jade from a valued source, so I am pretty confident they are genuine. At any rate, they are some of the most amazing stones I have seen, having a wonderful antique appearance.
Each of the magnificent jade beads is separated by a rusty amber bone rondelle which helps to bring out the warm orange and yellow hues in the jade. Beautiful carved and antiqued creamy bone beads add a contrast to the darker hues of the other components as well as adding a contrast of texture and shape. Vermeil rondelles and brass heishi, wire, and clasp bring some depth and brilliance to this very earthy, natural tone neckpiece.
Made in Ghana, Africa, the dramatic and primitive brass beads at each necklace end are mysteriously ornate and wonderfully authentic. Each bead is individually handmade from wax and then cast with molten brass so no two are perfectly identical. The larger brass beads measure approx 24mm in diameter, though some may be slightly smaller and some slightly larger. The casting process used to produce these beads is called the "lost wax method" and it dates back to the 7th century in Africa. These beads have a wonderful, rustic character including an occasional small dent, hole or other irregularity giving them so much flavor and soul!
The Buddha amulet is handcrafted of antiqued brass in Indonesia and is about 50mm in length. This enchanting necklace is 24" in length but can be adjusted up to 28" using the attached brass chain.
