Dark and mysterious, this original artisan necklace is made almost exclusively of terra cotta clays that have been fired and processed to obtain beautiful colors and metallic shine. The simple design of the necklace is balanced by the complexity of the beads themselves. Although modern in design, this necklace celebrates the art of raku, a centuries-old pottery technique that is both earthy and elegant.
Raku is a firing technique that uses fire and smoke to create unique finishes on the pottery glaze. It was developed in the 16th century in Japan by Chojiro, a potter who had been commissioned to produce tea bowls for the tea ceremony in Kyoto. His bowls became famous and his family was honored with a new family name of Raku, roughly translating to “pleasure” or “enjoyment”. His tea bowls eventually came to be called rakuyaki, raku wares, and his style of pottery raku. Today, the Raku family is in its 15th generation, still creating pottery in the traditional raku-style.
Raku-technique has evolved into many different styles and forms, all based on the traditional firing techniques developed in Kyoto. The beads in this neckpiece are created with high temperature firing of special volcanic clays with oxide glazes. They have the appearance of oil in the moonlight, with bands of volcanic clay and iridescent yellow. Because of the raku firing process, every one of these beads is distinct in both color and texture.
The silver beads are terra cotta that has been fired with copper and then coated with pure silver, giving the beads an almost “liquid” appearance. These beads separate the raku beads so that each one can be uniquely admired. Natural leather cord complements this soulful piece and adds strength and earthy flavor. Kyoto closes with a unique button-style clasp and silver wiring. Although not labeled one-of-a-kind, every necklace created is a unique piece of handcrafted artisan jewelry.
